“Digitization and outreach actions for the viewing and promotion of paper archive of the public library of Kalamata” The project entitled “Digitization and outreach actions for the viewing and promotion of paper archive of the public library of Kalamata” is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in the Priority Axis “Development of mechanisms to support entrepreneurship” of the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation” and from national resources of the Public Investment Program. The Funding body is the Ministry of Development and Investments. The project concerns utilization of digital media and the use of emerging technologies for the preservation, promotion, and media dissemination οf the archival and bibliographical repository of Messenia. The project’s objective is the utilization by the Public Library of Kalamata of ICT for the preservation and protection of the cultural repository of Messenia. More specifically, in the context of the project, the following work packages were implemented: • Digitization, editing and scientific documentation of the entire newspaper archive of Messenia from 1830-1972, a total of 200,000 pages. • Design and development of a website for the online promotion of the Public Library of Kalamata. In this way, the special character of the organization is highlighted more, as its actions and work include a wide range of activities. Through the new website, the user will better understand the actions and programs of the Public Library of Kalamata. • Interactive timeline : Within a timeline the end user can see the selected events of the history of Messenia through the front pages of the newspapers based on their publication. The application is an alternative narrative presentation of the archive, highlighting milestones of the local history. • Documentation and collection management system for the Library’s Archive . In the context of this work package, the installation and configuration of the opensource software Collective Access was carried out. The software was configured in response to the elements that make up the newspaper. • Virtual Exhibition Application – Design and development of the online archive . A special online hub was developed that functions as a center for the transmission of knowledge and information about the events of Messenia as they were recorded through the prefecture’s newspapers from 1821 until today.
